Dear Whānau
Welcome to Term 1. I hope you and your whānau enjoyed the summer break. I enjoyed a fabulous holiday in Queenstown and got an amazing tan sailing in Taupo. It is great to be back though; I am excited about having your children for the year!
It is exciting to start my second year here at St Albans and I’m looking forward to building on what we learnt last year to have an even better year this year.
We have 21 students in the class this year. A special mihi to Evania, Matakaea, Jakaia, Makani, Te Rore, Te Po who are joining us from Tipu. I am really looking forward to getting to know the children better and am sure we will have a great year.
Some Key dates for term 1 you may wish to add to your calendar are:
Swimming starts Tuesday week 1
Whānau Hui Thursday 12th 4:30pm
16th Aqua gym week
4th March Powhiri at Matatini to VIPs
2nd April-Last day of the term
Our first Inquiry focus for the year is ‘Ko wai au’ ‘Who am I?’
Our Reading programme is designed to scaffold and support the learning of each individual student. This term we will be using a specific programme designed to build upon the children’s reading skills - Will explain more at our whānau hui.
In Maths we will be looking at Statistics till week five.
Homework expectations: The children will have weekly spelling, maths and reading.
Reading: Is the most important task to do every night at home, a reading book for the week will be used at school and the children are free to take this home and share it with you but our preference would be your child’s personal choice of reading material. The idea is that this is the time to practise fluent reading and that is should be fun. As adults we choose to read easy material for our recreational reading and that is the habit we are seeking to create. It is time to practise using funny, read aloud voices and expression and talk about what is happening in the story.
Maths: Basic facts or a timetables will be sent home each week and your help in assisting your child to commit these to memory so they are able to recall them almost immediately is a great advantage to their maths learning in the classroom.
Housekeeping:
· Term 1- is a hat wearing term so please help your child to ensure they have one at school to wear.
· Extra Notices: will be available on the wall in the foyer of the classroom.
· Our Classroom Timetable: will soon be on displayed here so that you can find us if you need us when we are not in the room. Our senior assembly time is Thursday 1:30 every second week. Our Hu Nui with T.R.R.R is 9:15am every Friday morning.
· Our Class library time is Tuesday 1:30pm. Please help your child remember their books to return on this day.
Please feel free to contact me at school should you have any concerns or questions.
